Due to the immense cultural heritage present in the city, the city council scrutinises every building project, including fences. While most fencing projects require a building permit, a planning permit may also be necessary if the property falls on certain overlays.

The fence doesn’t need to be an exact historical replica (unless that’s the whole point of the project), but it must conform to the building’s theme and the surrounding streetscape. Other requirements include the height being no more than 1.2 metres and allowing some visual transparency, meaning privacy fences aren’t advisable.

The council also advises discussing your fencing project with them before applying for a planning or building permit. Required documents include:

  • A duly-accomplished Application for Planning Permit form
  • A copy of the Certificate of Title, no older than three months from application date
  • Drawings that detail the project in A3 size and 1:100 scale
  • At least two generic colour samples (available at the Planning & Building counter)
  • Photos of the site and the surroundings (optional but improves odds of approval)
