Build or update a fence Front Fence Height & Design Requirements

Fences can go up to the following height limits before they require a building permit:

1.2 metres for masonry front fencing within 3.0 metres of a street alignment
1.5 metres for non-masonry front fencing within 3.0 metres of a street alignment
2.0 metres for front fencing located on a declared road
1.2 metres for front fencing in a property located in GRZ1
1.8 metres for front fencing in a property located in other zones
1.0 metre for corner fencing within 9.0 metres of an intersection
2.0 metres for side and rear fencing

In most cases, a requirement for Report and Consent may accompany that for a building permit. The council may provide this if a non-compliant fence:

Takes into account prevailing heights, setbacks and nearby existing fence designs
The lot’s slope and existing retaining walls or fences lower the effective height
Will be designed to minimise noise intrusion into the property
Won’t disrupt the streetscape or view of the urban surroundings
Is consistent with relevant neighbourhood character and policy
