Fencing City of Darebin

Fencing regulations for properties in Darebin hinge on three elements: the fence’s height, the materials used, and the location within a property. On that note, here are the situations in which a fencing project requires a building permit.

  • A timber or metal front fence that’s more than 1.5 metres high
  • A brick or masonry front fence that’s more than 1.2 metres high
  • Front fence on a declared road that’s more than 2 metres high*
  • Fence within 9 metres of an intersection or corner that’s over 1 metre
  • Fence more than 9 metres of an intersection or corner that’s over 1.5 metres
  • Dividing fence that’s more than 2 metres high, regardless of the material
  • Pool barriers, regardless of height and material

Assessing the project site and filing a building permit is left to the private building surveyor of your choice. Application fees start at AUD$220.50, whether done conventionally or via the VicSmart permit application system. If you’re unsure whether or not your fence needs one, you can contact the Building Department at 03 8470 8899.

The council has the right to investigate fences that can pose a safety to both occupants and the general public. These include (but aren’t limited to) seriously damaged pool and spa barriers and any existing fence that’s over 1.2 metres high and built without a permit.
