Fencing Guideline

A building permit is necessary for homeowners if their fence meets any of the following:

  • Any fence whose height exceeds 2.0 metres
  • Non-masonry fences of over 1.5 metres and located within 3.0 metres of a street
  • Masonry fences of over 1.2 metres and located within 3.0 metres of a street
  • Fences located within 9.0 metres of an intersection and over 1.0 metres in height from the footpath level
  • Fences equipped with barbed wire and the like that are next to a street alignment
  • Fences that are part of a pool or spa safety barrier
  • Boundary fences that are over 2.0 metres in height (1.5 metres if within 3.0 metres of a street alignment), including extensions like trellises and latticework

Chain wire fencing that encloses a tennis court is exempted from being required a permit.

Private building surveyors can file a building permit on the homeowner’s behalf, provided the necessary documents are ready for submission. The lodgement fee costs AUD$134.40, excluding other applicable fees.
