Great Fences Erected By Great People

Since its founding in 2013, Grays Fences & Gates has been committed to enclosing homes of all shapes and sizes in high-quality fencing. From the classic picket to the robust and modern-looking aluminium, we offer just about every available kind of fence for homes all over Australia. Whether you live near the coast or in the sprawling suburbs, we have a fence just for you.

That said, fences are only half the equation. Some of them should only be installed with the right equipment and expertise to help them stand strong for a long time. On that note, our staff has decades of collective experience setting up various fences, some of whom have been in the fencing business before joining Grays Fences & Gates.

You won’t see a team that runs a tighter ship, let alone offer the best quality fences money can buy, than our company. Contact us for a free quote today.

The Grays Fences & Gates Story

2010: The Start of a Lasting Friendship

Mitchell met Andrew after the latter requested his help in setting up a picket fence for his home.Whereas most of his jobs tend to be uneventful, he happened to catch Andrew at a low point, later learning about the demise of his home improvement business.

At that time, Mitchell had little know-how on how to run a business, but he felt obligated to cheer Andrew up. On that note, he waived his fees for the fencing project, only asking to be paid for the materials used. A surprised Andrew thanked him for his kindness, and the two quickly became friends.

2013: Founding Grays Fences & Gates

Seeing a substantial demand for quality fence work, Mitchell thought about starting his own fencing business. To make up for his then-lack of experience in running a business, Mitchell invited Andrew to start Grays Fences & Gates with him. Despite initial hesitation, fearing that Grays Fences & Gates might suffer the same fate as his failed business, Andrew agreed.

For the first few years, the company only offered picket and timber fences. Nevertheless, it didn’t take long for it to get its first job: timber fencing for a medium-sized property in Point Cook. What made this memorable is that the owner had gone through a few other services that fell short of his expectations. Mitchell and Andrew’s work managed to fulfil them.

2015: The Great Fence Surge

Word about the company’s quality work spread across Melbourne. All of a sudden, it was getting too many calls even for two experienced fence installers. This phenomenon went down in the company’s history as The Great Fence Surge.

To deal with the influx of orders, Grays Fences & Gates began building several service teams with the help of Mitchell’s long-time colleague, Declan. While the demand still exceeded Grays Fences & Gates’ capability, it enjoyed a massive boost in revenue.

Near the end of the year, the revenue increase allowed the company to add aluminium and tubular steel fencing to its range of fencing solutions.

2017: Expanding to Geelong

Given the constant stream of orders close to home and the logistical challenges involved, the founders were hesitant to expand outside Melbourne. They were confident that orders in the most populated city in Australia wouldn’t run out anytime soon.

That mindset changed when they were approached by Owen Hagan, a tradesman based in Geelong who also primarily installs fences. Having heard about Grays Fences & Gates’ commitment to quality work, he offered to coordinate orders from Geelong and even set his home up as a small logistics hub where they can deliver the materials.

Mitchell and Andrew initially turned down the enticing offer. But it didn’t take them long to realise how competitive the fencing market in Melbourne had become, with competitors stepping up their game. After somewhat lengthy talks, Grays Fences & Gates expanded its services to Geelong, getting its first local order almost immediately.

2020: Weathering the Pandemic

The year of COVID-19 was an unprecedented time for everyone in Australia, especially for small businesses like ours. We saw projects cancelled left and right due to the quarantine restrictions and, at one point, feared going out of business.

Regardless, we managed to weather the pandemic through the handful of jobs we were able to complete and with the help of government subsidies. That said, it took a while for the business to return to normal.

2022: New Fencing Options Added

Our range of fencing options grew with the addition of brush and wire fencing. In the case of the latter, Grays Fences & Gates signed a partnership with Emu Wire to provide quality wire. We also expanded our team to cater to more requests and manage them more effectively.
