City of Glen Eira

The council advises property owners to check first if their fencing project needs a building permit to avoid inconveniences. In this regard, fences that exceed the following heights must have one before the setup begins:

  • 1.5 metres for boundary fences within 3 metres of a street alignment
  • 2.0 metres for boundary fences beyond 3 metres of a street alignment
  • 1.2 metres for front fences built out of masonry (e.g., brick, stone)
  • 1.5 metres for front fences built out of non-masonry (e.g., timber, steel)
  • 1.0 metres for corner fences within 9 metres of a street intersection or corner
  • 1.5 metres for any fence on a non-declared road
  • 2.0 metres for any fence on a Declared Road
